Prevention remains the key to combating atypical myopathy
Through epidemiological studies, protective factors and risk factors for atypical myopathy have been identified. These factors are the result of data analysis and should be interpreted with caution: they alone cannot explain why some horses are affected by this disease while others are not.
These factors have led to the creation of two broad categories of preventive measures: (1) at the individual equine level and (2) at the pasture level.
Finally, it is important to emphasize the significance of epidemiological studies that have enabled the identification of such factors. These studies are made possible through the information provided by horse owners (reporting of cases) and veterinarians (reporting of cases).
