First aid actions
Call your veterinarian as soon as you observe clinical signs compatible with the diagnosis of atypical myopathy
Regarding the affected horse:
- Move your horse as little as possible because any movement worsens muscle damage. If your horse hasn't already done so, please be mindful that it may soon lie down and be unable to get up. Ideally, lead it to the nearest stable or shelter where it can receive appropriate care.
- Take your horse's temperature. If the rectal temperature is below 37°C, warm it up. Conversely, if your horse is sweating, cover it.
- Have a container ready to collect urine. This is crucial as it will greatly assist your veterinarian in making a diagnosis.
Concerning field companions:
- Return all pasture horses to their respective stalls.
- Ensure that these horses are fed a complete mix.
- Prevent any pasture grazing by horses, especially during the autumn and spring seasons.
- Supply water to the horses solely from a controlled water source.
- Closely monitor these horses for 72 hours.
- Ask your treating veterinarian to examine the horses, and ideally measure muscle enzyme activity in their blood.
(*), if no lodging is available, urgently find another dry pasture, far from any watercourse, with few or no trees and devoid of deadwood. When transporting only a portion of your horses, give preference to those aged under 5 years and those over 20 years old.
